Welcome to the world of knitting! Knitting is a timeless craft that has been passed down through generations. Whether you are new to knitting or a seasoned pro, there is always something new and exciting to learn. One of the most popular projects for beginners is knitting bookmarks. Not only are these bookmarks functional, but they also make great gifts and can be customized to fit any personality or style. In this guide, we will take you through the steps of how to knit a bookmark.
The Basics of Knitting
Before we jump into the specifics of knitting a bookmark, it is important to understand the basics of knitting. Knitting involves interlocking loops of yarn to create fabric. The two main types of stitches used in knitting are knit and purl stitches. These stitches can be combined in various ways to create different patterns and textures.
To get started with knitting, you will need some basic tools including knitting needles, yarn, scissors, and a tapestry needle. Knitting needles come in different sizes and materials such as metal, bamboo, or plastic. The size of your needles will determine the size and tension of your stitches.
There are also various types of yarn available for different projects. For bookmark making, it is recommended to use thinner yarn such as sock or lace weight yarn for more delicate and precise stitches.
Casting On
The first step in knitting any project is casting on. This creates the first row of stitches on your needle. There are several methods for casting on depending on your preference and the type of stitch you want to use.
One common method for casting on is called the Long-Tail Cast On method. This method creates a neat edge with an even tension that makes it perfect for bookmarks.
To cast on using this method, follow these steps:
1) Hold your needle in your dominant hand with about 6 inches of yarn hanging off the end.
2) With your non-dominant hand, make a slip knot in the yarn by creating a loop and pulling the yarn through.
3) Place your slip knot on your needle and snug up the yarn by pulling on the tail.
4) With your non-dominant hand, pinch the base of the slip knot with your thumb and forefinger to create a loop around your needle.
5) With your dominant hand, insert the needle into this loop from front to back.
6) Pull on both ends of the yarn to tighten the stitch on your needle.
7) Repeat steps 4-6 until you have cast on the desired number of stitches for your bookmark.
Knitting
Once you have cast on your stitches, it’s time to start knitting. This is where you will use either knit or purl stitches (or a combination of both) to create rows of fabric. To knit using basic knit stitches, follow these steps:
1) Hold your needle with all cast-on stitches in your left hand and an empty needle in your right hand.
2) Insert the right-hand needle into the first stitch from front to back and wrap the working yarn (the one attached to the ball of yarn) around it counterclockwise.
3) Using this wrapped needle, pull it towards you and slightly upwards, slipping it under/behind the left-hand needle as shown below:

4) Pulling up/down slightly more after latching on ensures that no excess slack is caught up behind those two needles while knitting (your work end must not be strangled or pulled upwards though; keep a gentle hold of it). By doing so I also anticipate “anticipate(s)” mock Crochet/Knit successes such as the wrapped yarn going through another of its wraps by accident (you can just redo a bit; but I skip the difficult task of knotting in order to fasten the new stitch). It’s also quite stable using these two needles rather than just one, since you can hold them stable firmly with more than one finger.
5) Using the right-hand needle behind/around the left-hand needle, pull this newly formed loop EXITING THROUGH BACKWARDS when viewed from the right-hand side of your work which is knit going clockwise, resembling a flattened C-path-direction or plate shape. Instead of throwing it in front of other stuff it might encounter/tangle with while squeezing through turning toward us “clockwise”. Do be careful that this doesn’t switch back to frontwards (clockwise mirroring from pipe character) while going through. If you’re purposely practicing twisted knitting for a project;
use your usual methods for this. For a usual project however it is important that it is not twisted so familiarize/sharpen and rethink/relearn this emphasized step these time.
6) Suddenly move loop with HTS/stiches attached anticlockwise around flywheel or sprockets quickened at which they will wait and then space out. I recommend your viewing pictures etc.
Learning how to knit can be a rewarding and enjoyable experience. Not only is it a relaxing hobby, but it also allows you to create beautiful and useful items, such as bookmarks. Knitting a bookmark may seem like a simple task, but with the right techniques and materials, you can make a bookmark that is not only functional but also visually appealing. In this guide, we will outline everything you need to know about how to knit a bookmark, from the materials needed to the step-by-step process.
The Right Materials
Before diving into the knitting process, it’s crucial to have all the necessary materials. The type of yarn you choose will depend on your personal preference and the design you want for your bookmark. A thin cotton or bamboo yarn is ideal for creating delicate and lacy bookmarks, whereas thicker acrylic or wool yarns are better suited for creating chunky and durable bookmarks.
Along with yarn, you will also need knitting needles. The size of your needles will depend on the thickness of your chosen yarn. For thinner yarns, smaller sized needles (around US size 3-6) are recommended, while thicker yarns may require larger sized needles (around US size 7-10). Also, consider using circular needles instead of straight ones as they allow you to easily knit in the round.
Finally, don’t forget about basic knitting tools such as scissors, stitch markers, and a tapestry needle for weaving in loose ends.
Casting On
Once you have all your materials ready, it’s time to cast on. Casting on is simply creating the stitches on your knitting needle to start your project. There are several different methods for casting on, but the two most common methods are a long-tail cast-on and a knitted cast-on.
To do a long-tail cast-on:
1. Make a slipknot at the end of your yarn.
2. Hold the needle in your right hand and the tail end of the yarn in your left hand.
3. With your thumb and index finger, make a loop with the yarn around the needle.
4. Pick up this loop with your needle and gently pull on the working end of the yarn to tighten the loop onto the needle.
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until you have cast on enough stitches for your desired bookmark length.
To do a knitted cast-on:
1. Make a slipknot at the end of your yarn and place it on your needle.
2. Hold both strands of yarn together with your left hand, with the long tail over your thumb and the working end over your index finger.
3. Insert your right needle into the first stitch on your left needle from front to back.
4. Wrap the working end of the yarn around both needles as if to knit.
5. Pull this new stitch through to create another stitch on your right-hand needle.
6. Repeat steps 3-5 until you have cast on enough stitches.
Knitting The Bookmark
With all stitches successfully cast on, it’s time to start knitting! The type of stitch used for knitting a bookmark will depend on its design, but common stitches include garter stitch, stockinette stitch, and lace patterns.
If you’re new to knitting, garter stitch may be a good place to start as it only involves knitting every row.
To knit in garter stitch:
1. Start from one end of your cast-on row (your first ‘knit’ row).
2. Bring your yarn to the front between needles (purl position).
3. Insert right-hand needle into first stitch below left-hand needle (through back leg) knitwise.
4. Wrap working strand counterclockwise around right-hand needle then knit it through the stitch. Leaving the stitch on the left-hand needle.
5. Repeat step 4 for all stitches on your left needle until you reach the end.
6. Turn your work, bring your yarn to the front between needles, and repeat steps 3-5 until you have reached your desired bookmark length.
You can also create patterns by alternating between knit rows and purl rows. This is known as stockinette stitch.
To knit in stockinette stitch:
1. Start from one end of your cast-on row (your first ‘knit’ row).
2. Bring your working yarn to the front between needles.
3. Insert right-hand needle into first stitch below left-hand needle (through back leg) purlwise.
4. Wrap working strand counterclockwise around right-hand needle then purl through the stitch, leaving it on the left-hand needle.
5. Repeat these steps for all stitches on your left needle.
6. Turn your work, bring your yarn to the back between needles, and repeat steps 3-5 until you have reached your desired bookmark length.
